RESEARCH ALERT-AMD 1998 profit estimates shorn

NEW YORK, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Soundview computer chip analyst Scott Randall cut his 1998 earnings estimates for Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE:AMD - news) back by more than 30 percent, to $0.83 a share from his previous forecast of $1.22.

-- Randall set a 1999 earnings estimate of $2.11 a share.

-- The semiconductor company's rating was left unchanged at short- and long-term hold.

-- Shares were off 1/2 to 18-5/8.

-- The Sunnyvale, Calif., company reported a fourth-quarter loss after the market close on Tuesday that was less than Wall Street had expected. It lost $0.09 a share compared with a loss of $0.15 in the same period last year. Analysts expected a loss of $0.14 a share according to First Call.

-- It said it saw little impact from Asia, was helped by strong pricing for its flash memory chips, but said manufacturing snafus hurt production of its flagship K6 microprocessor.

-- For all of 1997, AMD reported a loss of $21.1 million, or $0.15 a share compared to a loss of $0.51 in the prior year.
