IMO, none of this would have happened without the Olympics in South Korea. It was at the Olympics that Kim's daughter made the agreement to meet with SK.

China said it'd put sanctions on NK coal IF the US didn't start a trade war. The US started a trade war so China started importing coal from NK again.

"Beijing said in February that it would halt all coal shipments from North Korea through the end of this year. Official Chinese customs data shows the country stuck to that pledge until August, when it imported 1.64 million tons of coal, worth about $138 million, from its smaller neighbor."

China has already backed off Trump's tough sanctions and is now suggesting that the UN should drop them

I see you've had responses to the latter. Re the former, I read a mention of it just the other day but it's hard to find a reference in light off the recent discussion of China and easing sanctions. But it happened right after Kim went to China the first time. There was also one discrete incident where some supplies were let in at China's request. I'm vague on that.

Rep Mike Gallagher (R-WI) said on Morning Joe that, in the post meeting press conference, Trump acknowledged that China was breaking sanctions. I did not watch all of it so I can't verify. He's on the Homeland Security Committee so I guess he would know.
