Our interests are our allies in the region, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc, and pushing back against Chinese and Russian hegemony.

Obama specifically said, he wanted to increase our presence in the south pacific arena and he did it partly by moving some of our military from the Middle east to that area.

And he was right on!
