I do not think that Trump would have given ZTE a reprieve without assuring Qualcomm/NXP would get the nod.
Agree in part. ZTE "reprieve" is not done, until the matter is approved by Congress. One would expect once ZTE settlement is finalized -- approved by Congress, penalty payments delivered to US Govt -- Chinese govt will formally approve NXP acquisition.

Caveat is how Trump continues to play trade war games. If he reneges on a deal, Chinese likely reserve the right to do the same. Issue is we don't know what "deal," if any has been struck between US & China on any specific trade matter or tariff. All we know is what the media reports. Media is too often wrong, and don't distinguish between fact & fiction. South China News release is just one example. We can find the same on this side of the Pacific.

We can't rely upon statements. We must look to performance.

You have a big assumption here (but possibly correct— as almost anyone here) that Trump even cares about Qualcomm/NXP. Trump does not do anything for anybody unless there is something he gets in return. He gives ZTE a reprieve to get WHAT in return ? Is it the loan for his company or is it Q/NXP approval ? Nobody knows what drives him that day. One thing I am pretty sure of, Trump will not do it for the benefit of the Q/NXP shareholders unless a close or remote entity in his empire benefits as well. So the trick is to follow the maze of connections and influences to see what clout Q has with this administration.
Btw,, I learned that I could get banned from this thread by criticizing Trump. I found it ridiculous where people on this thread can gossip/criticize/make judgment about others like the commissioner officials or judges but they cannot criticize Trump. Slacker, if you decide to ban me again, please at least explain why. Thank you
