Although China potentially does lose leverage if it doesn't approve by 7/25, it's still only an artificial deadline. I believe MOFCOM has until late October by its own clock to issue a ruling. Qualcomm and NXP may choose to further extend the merger agreement until then. It's also worth noting that approval has to come by July 6-ish because it will take 2-3 weeks to close.

The "Trump Throws a Wrench Into Qualcomm's NXP Deal" article from Bloomberg is ridiculous. Trump didn't throw an unexpected wrench in the works, Bloomberg reported an unverified rumor and didn't have the courage to openly retract the story. My read on the situation is Qualcomm has satisfied real regulatory concerns and China is prepared to issue a favorable ruling. Either it didn't want to announce on the same day tariffs were announced, or it's waiting for assurance ZTE is truly back from the dead.
