Intc also has an equity position in 3dfx.

I think they just have enough money that they can bet on all the horses.

What's a lil' competition? Sure Intel's real huge but whose gotten the market acceptance? U feel more secure with 3Dfx's products now or Intel's or Microsoft non-existent-still-in-production-testing chip that they have now? Like all hot-growth area stocks, my investment approach has always been this... buy what you can AFFORD, margins fine but be careful, and then when u think the stock will turn around (assuming u have a profit), sell out half of your position. If the price ever comes down to where u bot into the position, sell the other half. This way it guarantees yourself a profit no matter what (with the exception of high commissions). Otherwise, let the other half ride the wave to glory. Remember, competition always forces the industry to improve at a much more rapid clip. TDFX people are very much aware of this fact, I believe. That's what makes them so good. Voodoo2 and Banshee seems at least in-line with their schedule, right?

Oh Please. That news is something like a year old (at least). They don't have a "stake" in Real3D. They bought it. The Real3D stuff is the basis for their i740 graphics chip which is due out soon. Prelim reviews indicate something like a Riva-128 like performance from rumors. They also indicate the thing generates more heat than expected for the performance. All are unverified rumors.

Some people view i740 as a thread. Some view it as a good thing. As more baseline computers have 3D hardware assist, more games (and other applications) will assume such chips to be available on baseline computers. The result is more software being written that can take advantage of 3D acceleration.

In any case, unless the i740 is better than the initial rumors, 3dfx is not in trouble. i740 will be much cheaper but people pay for added quality and increased speed of Voodoo 2 which will be out by time i740 is out.
