If the choice is stay and be killed, or migrate and be separated, I think they will choose separation.

I would expect that to alter the threshold of who would be desperate enough to come. Those with strong asylum claims would prefer separation.

Perhaps we haven't been seeing a cross section of kids arriving but it sure doesn't look like their parents were expecting the separation, otherwise they would have let the kids know what to expect and how to react.

Maybe we should work with Central American countries to help improve conditions, so that people won't have to flee.

That was the notion pre-NAFTA wrt Mexicans. Economic conditions improved greatly in Mexico, thus lessening the need to go north.
