Pat: I'm not going down the Westell valuation path again. On the DMT vs CAP issue, Westell will support both. Let's assume Westell did only DMT, they would have to write-off those power hunger LSI/Harris/ADI/ALA chips anyway. The silicon just isn't there for ADSL-heavy DMT. TI, MOT, ADI and ALA "R3" will eventually have the first DMT silicon for mass deployments. Westell was using ADI DMT silicon years ago with BT. Westell asked TI if they were interested in a DSP solution 2 years ago. I don't think Westell ignored the DMT side, but ADI and MOT both let down Westell. If Westell didn't have CAP, I doubt they would have won GTE-CLEC, BT, BA, etc... until later.

Turn and Face the Strain - [DSL Stories]

This month's copy of Americas Network arrrived yesterday.
It is full of stories on ADSL. There's even a full page story by
Rupert Baines, and for once I finally agree with Rupert.

ADSL Lite

"Personally, I'm less convinced by the arguments in favor of
low rates for three reasons: in terms of the end-to-end system
the cost saving is trivial; is any amount of bandwidth really
"enough?"; and will consumers really prefer DSL at 500 kbps
when cable modems promise 10 Mbps?"

What's next for xDSL ?
All hype aside, xDSL keeps up the hectic pace.

pat--

i am not too concerned about writeoffs of inventory since it is likely that BEL will be able to take the CAP RADSL gear, which they have already contracted for.

my concern is getting DMT chipsets form TI before other do, which i dont think is going to happen. is PAIR going to use the TI solution?

good luck to all,
trey
