The GSA is the U. S. General Services Administration. It is the (more or less) normal central purchasing agency for major items certified and available for governmental agencies. If a product is approved and listed with the GSA, any agency can order a product, such as the CYI 405LT Tempest laptop (which meets National Security Agency level I requirements). Thus if the Air Force wanted to specify its inclusion within an airplane upgrade program, the item would be already certified and available for order through the GSA (as I understand it). The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, FBI, CIA or other agency could also specify it too right out of the GSA listing for a weapons/equipment program. In other words, much easier for procurement.

Darleen... I am he! I have flown the Boeing 757 and the 767. So that you can get a handle on where these computers will probably be used I suggest you read the VC-137 mission at Andrews AFB. [see below] The C-32A is going to replace it. There are probably 10 airplanes or so in the 89th Air Wing's inventory. This is only a guess as I was never assigned to that squadron when I was on active duty. My experience was 35 years with American Airlines. These computers as well as any component in or on an airplane require an airworthiness certificate. I believe that is what Boeing is doing now with the 405. I imagine these computers will be used solely for communications as the 757 itself already has numerous computers all related to the operation of the plane so the 405 is a specialty component for a special mission. Exposure of the product is the main thing here...i.e. it all is a plus! af.mil They are going to make the C-32A just like the the VC-137 has been all along but with a BIG upgrade to the on board technology.
