After the first WW, people turned against open borders just like they are doing today. The world was of course a basket case and poor people with nothing poured into America. Into Ellis Island. The reaction was tight quotes and the people had to jump through the hoops. Those that didn't qualify for one of many reasons were sent back from whence they came. Only thing is they were put back on the return boat across the Atlantic - not just forced to walk back across a bridge.

We live in a democracy wharf. That means people get to determine what they see as an acceptable number of people to come in. You can't live in a democracy and play just by those rules you like - you must play by all the rules. Perhaps the biggest reason Trump won is that he picked up on this feeling - just like in the 1920's. So I don't much give a shit how much those on the left think they are in the right - BECAUSE, for my own personal reasons (mostly environmental) - I don't ever want to see another Trump as our president again.
