"I keep looking for explanations that make sense but no joy."
Small hands are tools of the devil?

"I'm no economist so I could be missing something but I cannot imagine setting a goal of free trade and then thinking that the logical first step is a trade war."

I think the goal is to get a trade surplus with each and every country in the world, and services don't count. We actually have a trade surplus with Canada, but you wouldn't know that by listening to him.

No, Mr. President. The US doesn't have a trade deficit with Canada

Here's how the 2017 trade deficit is calculated:

The US had a deficit of $23.2 billion last year with Canada just in goods -- everything from toys to cars.

But the US had a surplus of $25.9 billion with Canada last year in services -- everything from tourism to technology to health care.

Subtract the goods deficit from the services surplus, and you get an overall US trade surplus of $2.7 billion with Canada.

If you and others here can start judging Trump by the results and what he does as president rather than what you predicted he would do it would help you understand it all and a good starting point. You maybe a little stubborn for that change. Just give him the opportunity. JMHO

On the trade war:

As with so many things Trump, he's not playing 3-D chess, he's simply a moron that knows no history and has no real strategy.
