Years ago my neighborhood had that exact incident happen. A few houses from mine, folks I didn't know, installed some sort of burglar alarm system. They left town a few days later, never thinking to let the police, or even the near by neighbors know about it. More importantly, no one knew how to shut the damn thing off. It wailed an air-raid style siren for at least 7 or 8 hours straight before a judge (I think this is the way it happened) authorized the police to enter the residence, find the control box and shut it off.

Those folks were unpopular for as long as they lived there. No ever heard that siren again though!!!

One thing I have heard seems to work reasonably well: Set up motion detectors outside around the perimeter of the house and connect them to the loudest siren you can find.

Downside... Animals can set them off and your neighbours will eventually chase you out of town.
I've also heard that setting up landmines and Claymore explosives set off by motion detectors and tripwires can be equally as effective, though you will likely spend a great deal of time in court and possibly prison for using them.
