How is that not "zero tolerance?"
"Zero tolerance" isn't simply turning them back at the border or deporting them when they're caught.

Instead, it involves arresting them, throwing them in jail, putting them through an already jam packed court system, and going through the trouble of indicting and convicting them of a criminal offense.

It was meant to send a message, but in the process it got incredibly messy. Had we just turned them back at the border, we wouldn't be separating families or incarcerating them or anything like that. The kids wouldn't be our problem, since they'd remain with their parents outside of our borders.

The interesting thing is that throughout this ordeal, the polling hasn't moved. On 538, it has moved a fractional point.

Sensible people understand that if you're going to do ANYTHING about the immigration problem hard choices will have to be made.
