President Carter started the process of raising interest rates. Higher rates kill inflation. Reagan thought tax cuts would create more supply than needed and kill inflation, but Volcker increased interest rates and killed demand, the exact opposite.

Since a recession begins when the economy peaks the recession was 16 months (peak to trough). It was longer than all previous post WW2 recessions until the Great Recession which was 18 months.
