"There are a lot of nasty places in the world."

Most of them are a very long swim away from us, but Central America is part of the migration route for this hemisphere, so it's a more immediate problem. However, we can't take everybody, or even just all the kids. There are 180M kids under the age of 18 in Latin America. It's a hemispheric problem, and we aren't gonna solve it without help from the other countries. We aren't gonna be able to address that with a broken State Dept. I've heard we don't have ambassadors in El Salvador and Honduras.

"Assassinate the bad guys at the top? Invite all the nice ones to come here? Overthrow the government, take over, and make them another Puerto Rico?"
No, no, no, and no.

"Send troops and trainers to shape up their law enforcement? "
Yep.

" Send money to help them develop"

I dunno. Long term, the outlook isn't good.

Indeed, but most of them aren't providing a steady stream of people knocking at our door and seeking asylum.

Like what? Which is why I asked. Get back into the nation-building business? Send troops and trainers to shape up their law enforcement? Send money to help them develop, maybe build factories and offshore our jobs there? Assassinate the bad guys at the top? Invite all the nice ones to come here? Overthrow the government, take over, and make them another Puerto Rico? Not good options.

I would suggest the least militaristic option. I would not look to impose a solution on Central America, I would offer to help them develop a plan, then support that plan.

There are a lot of nasty places in the world.

Indeed, but there is only one area where we can have an impact on the migrant/asylum situation that faces us.
