Although the converter boxes are several months behind schedule, TCI says they will help it compete against the wider channel selection of satellite TV systems. TCI, the nation's largest cable company, has about 450,000 subscribers in 27 franchises in the Dallas area, up about 10,000 from 1996... ...Regional vice president Dale R. Bennett says the company is marketing quietly, sending fliers about the service to the pay-per-view subscribers who are most likely to sign up. Other customers will be contacted as the company builds confidence in its ability to sign them up... ******* From a phone conversation: Collieville (sp?) and Grand Prairie and another were areas mentioned that are currently being trialed, and that users in those areas simply can call to become added to the trial. I was also told "May 1998" and "midsummer" for wider area rollouts. Regarding delays on rollout, the above article explains: "TCI initially planned to offer the converter boxes to nearly all customers by the end of 1997, but a last-minute technology switch delayed the launch." I wonder what was this "last-minute technology switch" that proved problematic enough to interrupt an initial "end of 1997" plan for rollout to "nearly all customers." Eric
