Re Verizon, we were traveling in South American and Central America. No Verizon phone worked although they claimed they would. They even refused to refund the international charges! I advised one friend to complain to the FCC and the charges were promptly reversed. (She had an iPhone.)

So, my advice is to stay away from Verizon if you plan to travel internationally.
