M2 PRESSWIRE-14 January 1998-SIEMENS GEC COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: Tyneside school first to enter
European Community Telematics Programme (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- Monkseaton School uses Siemens multimedia technology to support foreign language teaching and communication with
schools abroad

Siemens GEC Communication Systems Limited has won an order for its latest multimedia communications technology from
Monkseaton Community High School. Monkseaton will run Siemens Video on Demand equipment with a high speed
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Local Area Network across its site in North Tyneside. This will enable pupils at the
school to be at the forefront of distributed multimedia training. The order also includes ISDN videoconferencing equipment
which will enable pupils to practise their foreign language skills and talk with students in schools abroad that are also
connected to the new GBP 1 million EC-funded Students Across Europe Language Network (SAELN).

Monkseaton Community High School has already established video links with other state schools in Lille, Hamburg and La
Corua. The order with Siemens now enables Monkseaton to become the leading school in the European Community's
Telematics Programme, which aims to establish an IT and telecoms infrastructure for educational bodies across Europe.

"We are seeking to develop an integrated blend of innovative methods, partnerships and technologies that can serve as a
model for any school," commented Dr Paul Kelley, Head Teacher of Monkseaton Community High School. "The Siemens
solution allows us to create a new learning environment that combines the best of traditional teaching and learning with the
appropriate technologies. It is partnerships such as this that the Government is promoting to raise standards."

Siemens will supply the school with a REALITIS ATM network supporting Video on Demand software and encoding
equipment from project partner, Telemedia Systems Limited. The system will allow the school to create their own MPEG
video and store it on the server, using an encoding device on the ATM network.

The REALITIS ATM family of products provides easy-to-install and simple-to- operate ATM LAN switching for the
multimedia PC workgroup. Siemens 25 Mbps ATM desktop delivery solution provides high-speed data throughput and
effective bandwidth management affordable on the desktop, enabling high quality video streaming, desktop video/audio
conferencing and complex imaging.

Monkseaton Community High School featured in the Excellence in Schools White Paper published in October 1997, which
outlines the Government's aims for education over the next five years in England.

Monkseaton Community High School is a coeducational, non-selective state school for students aged 13 to 19 traditionally
serving Whitley Bay near Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a Local Education Authority designated school for the mainstream
education of students with physical special needs. The school has recently become a language college.

Siemens GEC Communication Systems Limited is the new force in business communications, offering a full choice of
technology solutions from simple telephony through to full network outsourcing. The company operates centres of competence
for research, development, manufacturing and support located throughout the UK and in a number of international markets. It
has a turnover in excess of GBP 265 million and is part of Siemens Private Communication Systems Group, the world number
one PABX supplier.
