I thought you were against the government controlling people's lives? What's more controlling than forcing a woman to even partially devote her next 18 years or more to raising a child? Why should the government have any say in that decision at all?

I'm fine with 25 weeks, but, I'm a man..

If you want to drag science and/or medicine into it, full brain development doesn't occur until much later than 20 weeks. Pain can't even be experienced at that point, and that is a pretty basic function.

Europe is not a good example, though. In Europe, the church is often integrated into the government to the point where a lot of church funding comes from the government. In most cases, that is the Catholic church. So a lot of compromises have been made to accommodate the church. Not the least of which has been abortion restrictions.

"Do you think a 20 week cut-off is reasonable?"

No. Judaism requires partial birth abortion when necessary to protect the life of the mother.

Will evangelicals still love and/or respect Israel in the morning?

Israel's abortion law now among world's most liberal

Despite its conservative leanings, government approves free pregnancy termination for nearly all women, and it barely causes a ripple

By DEBRA KAMIN 6 January 2014, 4:08 am 49
Israel, a nation with a forceful religious lobby and a conservative prime minister, is poised to offer its female citizens some of the most liberal abortion coverage in the world.

The nation’s Health Ministry commission, led by Dr. Yonatan Halevy, last week announced its state-subsidized “health basket,” the package of medications and services that all Israeli citizens are entitled to under the nation’s health care system. It was approved by the cabinet on Sunday. The health basket is analyzed and amended on an annual basis, and among the many additional treatments to be offered to Israelis in 2014 are free-of-charge abortions for women ages 20-33.

Israel has always had a liberal stance on abortion, allowing women facing medical emergencies or those who are victims of rape or abuse to receive subsidies to help them terminate their pregnancies. Outside of those regulations, women can apply for abortions for reasons ranging from an emotional or mental threat caused by the pregnancy or for not being married to the baby’s father. All women who seek to end a pregnancy must appear before a three-member committee to state their case, but 98 percent of requests are approved. Women under the age of 20 or over the age of 40 were also previously eligible for subsidized abortions, regardless of the reason....

So if a person stops being able to breathe on its own, does it stop being considered a person?

I specifically said "first breath." It was simply my way of expressing "born," as I later explained. It had nothing to do with a subsequent loss of the ability to breathe.

At the same time, they have a horror of possibly reinstating late-term abortions.

What is the basis for the differentiation? I don't mean the technical differentiation, for example, brain structure. I mean conceptually. Whether we're talking 20 weeks or trimesters or whatever, why is one tolerable and the other not?

Still looking for rational explanations...
