I haven’t been back since the war, but it that rings true to me. The region has a long history of ethnic strife, Tito held Yugoslavia together, after he died, it’s gone back to the nasty balance that keeps them angry and poor. I loved Yugoslavia, and met a lot on interesting people. But they are an incredibly hardheaded bunch, not open minded at all. That is a generalization of course...but I saw it over and over.... Anger simmers under the surface everywhere, add in heavy drinking as part of everyday life, it turns nasty very quickly.
