I don't know enough about this issue to speak confidently. So, I will speculate.

1. I am not sure who is included in this scientist category. Are social scientists considered real scientists?

2. A lot of science (most these days) is performed at universities. Their funding comes from the government and Democrats clearly support more funding for a wide variety of sciences. Perhaps these scientists vote their own self interest.

3. Universities are notoriously liberal. As we see here on SI, liberals hate people who have differing opinions. Could be that career paths for conservatives are limited.Liberals kill the career of conservative scientists. We certainly see that behavior in Hollywood.

4. Maybe scientifically oriented conservatives are Greedy SOBs like me and prefer the challenges of industry. I certainly had opportunities to pursue a PHd in biology and pursue a career in research. But, I didn't like the prospect of writing proposals and begging a government official for funding.

So, lots of reasons that the scientific career could self select for Democrats.

What percentage of scientists are atheists like us?
