The Handmaiden Tale. Still watching it. The thing that stands out to me as creepy as it is, is how few people realize that was sort of normal around the world until just the last hundred years or so and much less in many parts of the world. Women had almost no rights anywhere on earth until only about a hundred years ago and could not even leave a brutal marriage.even in western democracies. In the middle ages torture by the church and the state was the norm. They put people on the rack and drew and quartered them, and whipped them all the time. Public hangings were common until recently. Women could not vote or go to most colleges until just the last 100 years or so. Anywhere. Brutality was the norm.There was no Habeas Corpus. That is exactly what civilization rescued us from. And exactly what Trump and the Republicans are trying to take us back to with their uncivilized behavior.
