How much insulation do you have in the walls and celing? Just doing a quick estimate in my head of a typical house, a well-insulated house with an average for all surfaces of R-10 insulation would lose at least 36,000 BTUs per hour with a temperature differential of 60 degress F.

A small woodstove that wasn't burning red-hot would only be putting out maybe half that--maybe more--so you must have got the place really tight and well insulated. Or maybe it was 58+ in your warmest room.

We are expecting an ice storm tonight in North Carolina, but the worst that's ever happened here is about three days without power amid temps of around freezing. Yet I still keep an adequate supply of wood.

Good engineering!

John: time for you to move to California or Florida...life is too short to spend any of it freezing in the dark....
