I can still do it on my Mac... so far... I wonder why you can't do it on the other Mac product... too difficult for Apple's coders? Probably because Apple didn't have a web browser when web browsers were invented back in the day and Mac users were used to being able to download software from wherever they liked. Safari came along rather late in the game, not until 2003 with OS X Panther and several years before iOS existed. Before that, the dominant browsers on the Mac platform were Netscape and Internet Explorer. Also, Apple didn't have a Mac App Store nor a real way to lock users into the Mac platform for software like they do now. Some Mac software is now sold only on the Mac App Store. So, my point is, since Apple now has Safari, it is a mature browser at this point, and it continues their pattern of providing less user choice when they can. Safari was the only browser on iOS for 4-5 years. I guess we should feel lucky they allow other browsers on iOS at all.

I wonder why you can't do it on the other Mac product... too difficult for Apple's coders? Probably for security. A browser is a huge vector to the internet that can go literally everywhere. While Safari may be the most secure, or not, it is the know software as far as Apple is concerned. If a significant security problem is found, Apple can create an update to fight the problem and get it distributed fairly quickly. It is protection that Apple can work with to help maintain the "secure" image that they seem to be promoting.
