of safety surrounding the company's strategy. "We only can go
forward and deliver this baby. We must continue to spend on
capital expenditures for Fab 25." Thus far, Sanders
acknowledged, the yields from Fab 25 have been disappointing.

The loss of $12.3 million or 9 cents per share for the fourth
quarter ended Dec. 28 was not as large as some Wall Street
analysts anticipated. The First Call consensus Wall Street
estimate was a loss of 9 cents per share. AMD posted sales in
the quarter of $613.17 million, an increase of 3 percent compared
with the preceding quarter and 23 percent compared with the
similar quarter one year ago.

AMD chief financial officer Marvin Burkett said the company's
cash position will be affected by the 0.25-micron gamble.
"Certainly, for a while, cash is going to be tough," he said. "We
will deplete cash probably in Q1 and Q2."

AMD has been unable to meet demand on the hot-selling K6
processor. The company's K6 sales were up 26 percent over the
immediate prior quarter to $190 million. The company met its
objective in increasing unit shipments by 50 percent to 1.5 million
units and shipped "all of them," Sanders said.
