I didn't say its terrible (although it sometimes is) I said it went beyond just requiring politeness. Sometimes "beyond" as in further then what politeness would require. Sometimes not so much further as action or speech (or refraining from action or speech) in some totally different direction with little connection to being polite. Examples of the later include things like shutting down campus or other speech even from polite speakers through riots, shout downs and threats, the denunciation of quite expansively defined "cultural appropriation" (extending to things like a university banning or suspending yoga classes because white people (or perhaps anyone not or South Asian decent) practicing Yoga was cultural appropriation, or protests against a burrito and tortilla shop that was owned and run by a couple of white woman after they were quoted talking about traveling around Mexico collecting recipies, Netflix implementing (or at least promulgating) employee policies like "employees may not look at one another for more than five seconds at a time" and prohibiting asking fellow employees for phone numbers (not prohibiting asking for such phone numbers in a rude and/or repetitive way, or even for non-work reasons even once in a polite way, but generally forbidding it). You have the example of the demonstrations against, harrasment of, and threats to Bret Weinstein because he opposed "a day of absence" for white on the campus of Evergreen State College. In some other countries (and rich developed democracies I'm not talking about third world dictatorships) you have people arrested for making anti-PC statements in social media. Some of those statements are indeed rude, so you could say its enforcing politeness, but if a rude social media statement is some sort of transgression, arresting someone for it is much worse. More examples here nationalreview.com and I could come up with further ones if it was really important.
