To all:

China PC Sales Rise 40% to 3M in 1997

January 13, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China sold a total of three million PCs in 1997, up 40 percent over the prior year, with sales reaching approximately RMB30 billion (US$3.6 billion), according to statistics
from the Ministry of Electronics Industry.

Chinese companies accounted for 1.8 million units of the total, or some 60 percent of the domestic market. The share was up five percentage points from 55 percent in 1996.

Legend Computer Corp., Great Wall Computer Corp. and other Chinese corporate brands continue to expand in their markets. For instance, Legend sold some 400,000 PCs in 1997, doubling the figure of the previous year.

(Xinhua News Agency)

That leaves the entire home / school market at 1.2 million, or about 1 PC per 1,000 people. That's pretty pathetic, but not surprising. They just showed some pictures from rural China yesterday on PBS. It is a very poor and backward country. It will take a decades for them to reach US level of PC ownership (40% household and up). It may actually take a while until a majority of Chinese have indoor plumbing.

The people who think that a billion Chinese will each buy a $1,000 PC are dreaming.

However, $299 MediaGX based PC may have a chance.
