Once a competing system is in place (e.g.,MS's Excel) any other existing system (e.g., Borland Paradox / Lotus 123) is at risk of being made obsolete. A switch-over is simply a matter of scale-up and adoption of the new system.

MS made the investment into WYSIWYG spreadsheet manipulation which their competitors hadn't. The hardware wasn't ready but as soon as it was, their competitors found that they had wasted money on lawyers instead of development to argue who owned an interface that was rapidly becoming obsolete (123.mnu).

Analogously, we could find petrodollars are not how or what people want to trade.
