Pass, I think the SINGLE determining smart move by Gate was to take away all copy-protection from all its softwares in the late 80's. At that time all office softwares like Wordperfect, IBM Display Writer, Lotus-1-2-3 etc. etc. were copy-protected and have higher market shares than Microsoft. People still could find ways to break all the copy-protections but it created real pain for legal owners.

Once copy-protection came off from Microsoft, its office software sales simply exploded all over the world. Lotus and Wordperfect - eventhough had better technologies at that time, just dropped dead.
