g'day, John & all - John, you sez "Jay,it sounds like BAY is taking a page from CSCO manual on obtaining new technologies. I hope it works as well for them as it has for CSCO..."

John, while CSCO has more purchasing power, I think networker consolidations are inevitable. But I see BAY and CSCO are a bit more forward looking by stealing a page from INTC by buying into non traditional networking gear cos.

BAY investments in ATHM, Netspeak and now New Oak Comm etc are evident to acquiring a stake in technology cos that will further enhance the bandwidth expansion of infrastructures - with the hope that strategic alliances will solidify the standing of BAY technologies.

There will always be a danger to buying a dud - maybe CSCO's Granite. One of the problems is the uncertainty of technologies. ATM didn't pan out as good as those ANALists have forseen in 1997. I think ATM and Gigabit will split the spoil, so the best one can do is to hedge the bet.
