I don't think both should be accepted. The market and public opinion, though, is mostly what settles these issues. The "idea" that people should write authentically doesn't seem particularly offensive to me- especially when you don't encourage colonial cultures to further rip off the people they've oppressed by writing their stories for them. I'm not suggesting there should be a law- but I enjoy the public shamings. And hey, that's all just free market shaming, right?
