It is not a wild as guess. The most liberal Republican today in the congress is more conservative than the most conservative Democrat. The pubs have run all liberals out of the party.

That is historic and means there is no overlap in the tails of the normal curve with regard to ideology. The pubs and dems today represent two different populations.

As regards independents leaning toward the dem or pub party, they are mostly moderates or low information voters.

I would bet over 90% of all liberals are in the dem party, just like African Americans. Liberals know which party to be in.
