I'm sure that there have been talks over the past few years between the US and the EU

There has. And what was discussed was very much what Trump and the EU agreed to discuss. The earlier talks broke down, but that is often the case. Persistence should result in an agreement.

But blustering and grandstanding will likely not result in anything worthwhile.

<<"The major step toward liberalizing trade has been discussed since 2013.">>

This is correct, and the main reason why I pay little attention to your comments on trade is because you leave out Obama's failed attempts to get better trade agreements with the EU. It was only after Obama got nowhere that he turned to the TPP.

If you weren't so determined to demean Trump, you might have noticed that Trump opened his trade efforts by stating that his goal was to have zero tarrifs. In making this original statement, he's reminding the EU of the deal they were about to make with Japan. He set the EU up, don't you see? How does the EU now deny the US the same deal it gave to Japan?

One reason Democrats make so many bad predictions and end up looking silly is that they refuse to take a long view of anything. You guys are so eager to score a point you jump on anything that might suggest failure on the part of Trump. You don't frame anything as a step in a process.

With that in mind, take another look at the suggestion of $12 billion to compensate farmers. Trump is also telling China that he's in for the long haul. He's saying he will compensate farmers before he will let their pain cause him to give up his stand vis-a-vis tariffs. The proposal itself is a step in the negotiating process, not the end of it.
