Tide, They have one facility in Lockhart, TX and have a one-year exclusive agreement with Wackenhut which apparently likes the program. They pay their inmate employees minimum or prevailing wage, of which at least 25% goes back to the prison to offset the costs of incarceration. 25% goes to a victim restitution fund, while the remainder will either go into the inmates account or for family support. There was a very good article in the Christian Science Monitor today that covered some of Florida's non-profit attempts. Someone posted it on the USXX thread at:Message 3168244 USXX was taken over by new management that injected $1.5 million in personal money into the company thus giving them a strong vested interest in succeeding. They seem focused on utilizing labor resources here in the US rather than see the jobs go to Mexico. The inmates learn skills, earn more money than they normally would picking up trash along the highway, and it keeps the overall prison population under reasonable control. USXX only permits 20% of the population to work, with the other 80% waiting in the wings, on their best behavior, hoping one the assigned workers screws up and sent back to the general population. The status now is that we are waiting to have further facility agreements announced. There are hopes and plans for 7 total facilities by the end of 1998, the last I heard. Still speculative, but with a couple of more contract announcements, I will feel more comfortable and willing to devote more treasure to it. In the end every company must eventually prove itself to its shareholders. Regards, Ron
