I don't view it quite the same way.

"In many ways, the liberals have taken the upper hand in our culture. Many times, cultural taboos and subtle rules of civil society are far more powerful than any laws we pass. That's what has me worried. Political correctness and bullying, as well as self-censorship and a complete disregard for freedom of speech all are now the norm in American culture"

I see it as two 'opposing' political parties that in essence, agree on most issues of importance.

never ending war
ever larger, more controlling gov't
elimination of personal freedom

very few actions taken by either party fall outside of these 3 goals.

I have noticed my conservative friends and myself tend to either avoid political discussions or we soft pedal our own opinions so as not to upset any of our liberal friends
You avoid political discussions with liberals because you'd get your ass kicked. We had balanced budgets after a tax increase, not after a tax cut. Tax cuts under Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43 and Trump resulted in record deficits. Reagan nearly tripled the debt and "fiscal conservatives" looked the other way.

How can a conservative defend failure? By keeping his mouth shut.
