I was at a fairly expensive restaurant a month ago with my wife. My wife is an excellent cook so we're pretty judgemental when it comes to where we eat. I received a gift certificate for this restaurant so we gave it a try. The food was mediocre at best. My wife and I were discussing it along this vein: "If there going to charge so much here, at least keep it in the microwave long enough so that it's hot when served!" Sitting at the table next to us was a Latino family of 8 or 9. They were speaking Spanish throughout the meal and were having trouble even communicating to the waiter in English. The result was them ordering massive amounts of appetizers, desserts and main courses. I'm guessing the bill was at the very least a $1,000 but likely much higher. The most likely scenario, given the location of the restaurant, is that the Dad runs some type of landscaping or construction business in the beach resort area. He can apparently easily afford to blow a grand on a lousy dinner! Hard work pays off. They were all one big happy family and enjoying themselves immensely. Meanwhile, the majority of the populace in Hawaii is in one way or the other addicted to the government teat and struggling financially and wondering who they can blame for their miserable outlook on life. I have a friend(Mexican immigrant) that came here to pick coffee as a teenager and is now the biggest coffee farm manager on the island. He can easily afford to buy a 100 acres for over a $1,000,000 and start his own coffee plantation. I've found him to be trustworthy, honest and reliable and one of only two farm managers I can recommend. These character traits are hard to find in the general population. I believe that if anyone finds a job he/she likes, learns it well, shows up and works hard, they will be successful.
