Interesting thought. My offhand guess is that it originated with the rise of political correctness. Communists believed that the USA was a tough nut to crack because Communism depended on godlessness. Rather this was part of a plan or it just evolved, but morals and ethics have been on the decline. hedonism was on the rise in the 60's and with that "anything goes". The left has always been about identity politics and this is their way of attacking faith. They try the same thing with abortion in institutions opposed to abortion. Anything to insert a wedge. I don't think they always care that much about the issue other than they can use the issue as a means of attacking morals and faith-based belief. Frog in pot of water beginning to boil...
