Carson Wentz is back doing 11-on-11 drills at Philadelphia Eagles practice and might have taken another step toward starting Week 1 i the process. The Eagles aren't rushing Wentz, but Eagles head coach Doug Pederson revealed he will be splitting first-team reps with Nick Foles starting with Sunday's practice.

"It's big. It's big to begin to evaluate him and see where he's at and get him back in there with the guys," Pederson said. "It's still a slow process but at the same time it's exciting for him."

Pederson wouldn't commit to anything past the first practice Sunday, taking Wentz's 11-on-11 drills day by day. As for Nick Foles, he's back practicing after suffering a shoulder strain Thursday in the preseason loss to the Patriots. The injury was deemed minor after further tests Friday afternoon.

Speaking on SportsRadio 94 WIP last week, Wentz said "it’s gonna be close" when making the decision to start the season opener. Wentz also added that it's not all up to him whether he starts Week 1, as it's a collaborative effort between him, Doug Pederson, and the doctors when he returns.

"I obviously would love to be out there," Wentz said. "That's been my goal all offseason, ever since the injury. It's gonna be close. It's gonna be close. I am still eyeing that date, but at the end of the day it is not just my decision. There's coaches and doctors that really have the final say, but I really like where I am at and time will tell here."

If Wentz can not start the season opener, the good news for the Eagles is they have 11 days to prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (the Eagles open the 2018 season on a Thursday night). The regular season opener is 23 days away, but the Tampa Bay game is in 34 days. Playing in Week 2 would give Wentz an extra week-and-a-half of preparation for the Tampa Bay game and he can use the weekend and the second week as a regular game week, something he can't do with the short week leading up to the season opener.

"I can't speak for other teams and how they do things, but I feel it's important that the starter still maintains timing and rhythm and just getting in the game action," Pederson said. "Getting in that environment with crowd noise, another team. Game is a little faster. And just staying sharp from the quarterback's perspective. So that's what we try to do with our guys, our starters here. So, I do think it's important that our guys do play leading up to Week 1."

Pederson stated if Wentz was cleared for contact next week, he "probably would not" play the fourth preseason game. Wentz and the Eagles are preparing for him to return Week 1 and getting the first-team reps is crucial toward that becoming a reality.

"His arm is live. He's moving around well, Pederson said. "He's excited to get out there today." <<
