Being reminded of the hundreds of millions of dollars it will cost big companies to solve this problem makes me wonder about something mentioned in the January 14 issue of "BI Research," a stock advice newsletter I sometimes read....

This newsletter has followed for some time a pharmaceutical company, Lidak, that makes a compound for oral herpes called Lidakol. Here is what BI Research says about Lidakol (bold mine):

"LIDAKOL is a topical compound that knocks 3 to 4 days off the duration of an oral herpes outbreak, reduces pain... frequently aborts the outbreak...excellent safety. Trials are all done, the NDA has been submitted in record time and two days later bristol Myers Squibb walks away from the licensing deal for North America for which it had paid $3 million. To this moment the Company won't say what BMS's reason was, maybe BMS really won't tell them....Yet in the industry the rule of thumb is that if the drug works well enough for a company to commit the resources to filing an NDA, it gets approved 90% of the time...The stock has slipped...[yet LIDAKOL] would appear to have clear sailing. So the question is, is it the buy of the century...or does BMS know something? One possibility is that BMS has tons of these little bets like with LIDAKOL and just has enough other bigger fish to fry at the moment...It just doesn't seem that it was because the drug doesn't work well enough..."

Would it be so wrong to speculate what some of the other big fish BMS might have to fry at the moment might be?
