I see what you are saying, basically the batteries could act as a load smoother for the fuel cell output. I seem to remember somebody working on a 'super capacitor' for this application, which doesn't have the same weight and life restrictions that many battery technologies have. With a fuel cell driven motor, there really is no need for batteries. But I can see how capacitors could improve things by leveling the current demand somewhat.

The issue with temperature, IMO, is not getting up to it or cooling down, but safety. This factor has limited the application of flywheels too, which could boost effeciency with little cost. But it has to be proven safe, especially in our sue happy world, before being widely adopted.
