Howard,
I just listened to William Siedman (former FDIC chairman),according to him the money center banks could possibly get hurt due to Asian thing but to a lesser degree as most of the 200 billion IMF loans would be used to repay the loans from these banks by the respective countries. He also reiterated your sentiment that the 'real interest' is still a bit on the high side.Another point he mentioned is that some of these 'money center' banks might be able to pick up some S.E.Asian banks, who are in trouble, for a reasonable price thereby making their local operations stronger.

He also opined that regional banks should do much better than the overall market and thinks these are good investments.Mergers could continue in 1998 and he thinks most the deals will be done in the Midwest.
