I think it's a clash between transgender curling and straight bocce ballers

Yep, Ultimate is a field sport using flying discs, albeit not necessarily Frisbees. Frisbee is actually a trademark which can be used by only one of the many companies that manufacture flying discs. Most ultimate players prefers Ultrastars, made by Discraft.

The 'Mixed' refers to a version of the sport where there are either three men and four women or four men and three women on he field at a time, with the ratio being decided by whichever team is receiving the pull, akin to a kickoff.

The most interesting aspect of ultimate is that it is self officiated. The rules assume no one would deliberately break the rules, so it is very popular with schools because it teaches sporting behaviour and hence good citizenship.

I invented my own game I called frisbee football and had dozens of people playing it regularly in Victoria in the early '70s. Then I played in the first game of ultimate in British Columbia in 1979, and started the first team in 1982. Vancouver now has a league which has about 5000 participants, and every high school, college, and university in he province has teams, which gives me joy considering the humble beginnings.

I am a member of the Vancouver and Canadian Ultimate Halls of Fame. I haven't been able to play since 2001 due to a car crash, but still keep my hand in by writing about it, serving on committees, and helping put on tournaments. I am still getting used to being paid for my efforts after putting in thousands of unpaid volunteer ours over the decades.

We are putting together a bid for the World Under 24 Championships in 2021, and will likely be successful. There could be up to 50 countries represented by national teams.
