Cannabis has been with us for 20,000 years - possibly longer than alcohol. It was only vilified in the 1930s - the AMA was confused between marijuana (something Hurst made evil) and cannabis sativa (latin for 'useful'). We had to lock up those minorities and jazz musicians.

Finally a number of states later become sane. It took California 30 years longer than I imagined. There is no terrible crime or crash rate explosion - that was all bunk - there are people impaired but not as impaired plus they don't OD - they get better. Further, they tend to be less aggressive in all matters - driving inclusive. There are many reasons people become losers - drugs are often a self-medication for depression, ADHD, ennui and pain. The organic damage from cannabis is near nil - a couple self-limiting cases of the "too highs" show up in ER and people are largely fine in two hours. I've talked a number people down - calm voices and imagery works wonders. Tell them what they can see and say the bad things will vanish. Suggest a field of kittens. Or a ride on cosmic surfboard with lights turn down low and soft music.

The private prison people cream themselves thinking about all the black youths they could lock up. Let's treat drugs like any other illness or therapy. Quite honestly - my usage is down - way down and I'm glad my kids won't be hassled for it. We should study it and incorporate it into therapies. Use it as a reward for achievement and to take a little of the grief out of people's lives which kind of suck in a lot of places.
