Bitter melons are an Asian melon. There are several varieties with varying degrees of bitterness but being a Chinese girl, I love it lol! It is certainly an acquired taste:)

I even pluck off leaves from time to time and pop them straight into my mouth. The raw leaves taste very similar to the cooked melon.

It is pretty good in the classic beef and bitter melon stir fried with black bean sauce or just a plain vegetable stir fry with garlic, ginger and a touch of oyster sauce. Yes, I'm a foodie lol! But seriously, it is being studied for its benefits in fighting diabetes. I've submitted a few posts on the Diabetic Kitchen thread about this over the last year as my parents are both in rather good health (at 80) but developed diabetes and high blood pressure the last few years.

I am nowhere close to being in your league in terms of gardening, but I love doing it and I love reading your posts and updates. Please continue:)

I only grew 6 pepper plants in my driveway mini-farm, but the continuous harvest was quite neat! I started to pull down the plants this weekend and am preparing the soil so that I could put down some garlic in a few months and so the mini-farm will be a future source of garlic (fingers and toes crossed lol!)

I tried marigolds a few years ago as the city was giving them away as part of a gentrification project, but the kids weren't too keen on the scent but cala lilies are beautiful; I'd seen them as part of a beautiful planter display and the leaves were of the striped variety.

Since last week, I've got the most pretty cherry red/dark pink giant dahlia blooming in the front yard and I keep staring at it as I pass by. It is just a happy looking and healthy plant! Indoors, in a cherished clay pot, I've been nurturing two begonia bulbs and finally one opened this weekend. It is a pretty pale buttery yellow and coincidentally began blooming at the same time as the dahlia.

That's the report from the gardening front lol!

I hope that you and Jan have had a wonderful and productive long weekend:)
