Anything which causes buying helps our cause because this eats up the available supply and they must continue to short to hold the price down. A research report by a major firm would really help increase the exposure to more investors. Additional buying by the company would also be a benefit to the cause.

Regarding shorts by a MM. It is easy for them to skirt the short rules.If they are doing illegal short sales it will not show up in the short interest report.
