Not sure if it is still true today but years ago water heaters had a spicket at the bottom and routine maintenance was to attach a hose and drain it to get rid of the sediments that accumulate.

Common practice was to do this with a spare spicket on hand since the sediments sometime prevented the drain from fully shutting necessitating its replacement.
