But country and citizen aren't the only relevant entities....

...Which is NOT to say that individuals have no control or responsibility.

I think that your point is that there is a lot of complexity and individuals are impacted both favorably and unfavorably and constrained in many ways. To some extent we're all interdependent and to some extent we're in control.

Well, indeed.

I'm not sure what to do with that. We're looking at proposals to take what used to be consumer goods and services (for all but poor children and the disabled) and, instead, open up a joint checking account with 325 million checkbooks and 325 million pens. OK, that's a bit hyped, but it's still a very big leap to turn over payment responsibility for individual goods and services to the collective, tossing what we have into the commons for shared use. I'm suggesting that we not just drift into that but acknowledge what a big leap it is before we take the leap. You say it's complicated. Which is why I restricted my comments to the two key entities, one or the other of which will be paying for our college and healthcare. Two different paradigms. There are costs and benefits. Probably a good idea to think that through, not just brush it off with "well, all the cool countries do it."

these issues are way too complex to really discuss in a forum like this one.

So, you'd rather a board for the endless trading of barbs? <g>
