I HAVE, on many occasions, said (correctly) that FDR policy prolonged the Depression.

FDR did some essential things early on to put people to work and it was good policy. People were hungry.

He also made some serious mistakes that prolonged the Depression (creating SS and other programs that increased the cost of hiring at such an inopportune time, in addition to some spending programs that were counterproductive).

No one is perfect, but FDR was IMO an excellent wartime president and did handle the recession well early on. But we also know that the Roosevelt Recession was a direct result of those programs and without the war it is unclear how we would have gotten the change in consumer confidence that was essential to bringing us out.

Just as Trump's election caused a surge in consumer confidence to levels above those seen during Obama's entire eight year tenure, even with the false bashing of the media.
