A step which has not always been done in modern science (e.g., global warming). We got our hockey stick, let's go with it.

There you go again. If for no other reason, the idea of global warming preceded Mann by more than a century. Granted, there was not much in the way of evidence until the 1970s. I remember an oceanography class I took in the late 1970s where the rise in sea level since 1900 was attributed to thermal expansion of the oceans. At that time it was in the range of 17cm. By the early 1980s, it had even made it into the popular media with the melting of the glaciers and it was something I discussed with friends, We were living in Galveston, so everyone was pretty sensitive to the idea of sea level rising.

These things were well before the hockey stick. Pretending it was what started the idea is very, very wrong.
