Who? Vision First To Bring Low-Cost Fingerprint Security To PC Peripherals

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1998--

TactileSense(R) Technology Eliminates Passwords, Improves

Security And Convenience With Postage-Stamp Size Fingerprint Sensor

Who? Vision Systems, Inc., an XL Vision and Safeguard Scientifics partnership company, today announced TactileSense, a unique identity verification technology. By eliminating cost, reliability and size constraints, TactileSense allows - for the first time - mainstream computer users to securely access their desktops and the Internet with the touch of a finger.

TactileSense's breakthrough pricing and small size enable peripheral and systems OEMs to embed reliable fingerprint security sensors into everyday devices, such as monitors, keyboards and mice. Who? Vision's technology eliminates passwords and enhances security for system login, smart cards, network access, Inter-, intra- and extranet security, and e-commerce transactions. Future versions of TactileSense will target notebook computers, extending these security and convenience advantages to portable devices.

"Unlike existing fingerprint technologies, TactileSense is immune to the 'dry finger problem,' a condition that prevents a significant segment of a user population from reliably accessing their systems, particularly in cold or dry climates," said Alex Dickinson, CEO of Who? Vision Systems. "This performance improvement, coupled with our breakthrough pricing and volume distribution, will drive mainstream adoption of fingerprint devices."

The TactileSense system is composed of a unique electro-optical polymer film sensor, which is roughly the size of a postage stamp, and integrated print matching software that identifies the user's fingerprint data. The custom-designed sensor transforms a finger's electric field into a high-resolution optical image, then digitizes the optical image of the fingerprint. This digital representation is passed to the PC host, where application software processes, stores and matches the print.

This patented approach to fingerprint identity verification requires fewer and less expensive parts, substantially reducing manufacturing costs. The innovative design eliminates the dry finger, reliability and durability problems that continue to challenge competing fingerprint security technologies. The device's low power consumption allows it to be embedded into portable devices, and its opaque polymer touch surface is printable for branding.

Who? Vision brings TactileSense to market through manufacturing and distribution partnerships with leading peripheral and systems OEMs and strategic relationships with integrators and software developers. Products based on the TactileSense system are expected to ship in mid-1998.

Who? Vision Systems, Inc. is a personal identification company that applies unique imaging technologies to create highly reliable, cost-effective fingerprint authentication products. An XL Vision partnership company, Who?
